Tapping is the process of cutting internal threads in a predrilled hole, allowing bolts or other fasteners to be securely fitted. Choosing the right machine tap and pairing it with the correct tap drill size is essential for producing accurate, clean threads and extending tool life.
Manufactured from High Speed Steel with added cobalt, our taps offer outstanding heat resistance and wear durability, making them ideal for professional metalworking. These metric HSS Cobalt machine taps are designed to cut continuous threads in construction steel, aluminium, zinc, lead, copper, brass, cast iron, and stainless steel. All our taps, for both blind holes and through holes, are suitable for use in magnetic drilling machines that support right/left (R/L) rotation.
Tapping Chucks with Automatic Reverse
If your machine does not support right / left rotation, these taps can be used with our GSW series tapping chucks. These chucks automatically switch to counter-rotation for easy tap retraction, even without R/L functionality.
Through Holes – HSS Cobalt Machine Taps
Through holes are drilled completely through the workpiece, allowing chips to exit from the opposite side. Our HSS Cobalt machine taps for through holes feature straight flutes that push chips forward and out of the hole during tapping, ensuring smooth, precise results.
Blind Holes – HSS Cobalt Machine Taps
Blind holes are drilled to a specific depth without breaking through the opposite side of the workpiece. Our HSS Cobalt machine taps for blind holes feature precision-ground spiral flutes that pull chips up and out of the hole, preventing clogging and reducing the risk of tap damage.
DIN Standards – 371 vs 376
Machine taps are manufactured according to DIN standards, which define shank design and dimensions:
DIN 371: Reinforced shank for extra strength, used for sizes M3 to M10. DIN 376: Reduced shank diameter for deeper holes, used for sizes M12 to M24.
Note: M10 is available in both DIN 371 and DIN 376 depending on application and shank type.
